Are you considering buying the LitterMaid Elite? I cannot blame you, after all, LitterMaid is the first brand one considers when thinking about self cleaning litter boxes. They are one of the oldest manufacturers with global market share and brand recognition.
Let’s review a little about the LitterMaid Elite to see if it is the right box for you.
Firstly the LitterMaid Elite 9000, is a larger box designed for a large cat or multiple cat homes. It is set apart from the "non-elite" models LitterMaid sells in that it offers some added features like a built in timer to turn it off at night and the ionic odor control. Both these features work nicely. Of course, you pay extra for these features.
Alas, however, users also report the LitterMaid Elite is flimsy. Some users have gone so far as to say they would throw it out in favor of going back to earlier or smaller LitterMaid models like the LM500 or LM900.
Here is a quote from one user of the LitterMaid Elite 9000 from the Amazon site. “I suffered for two years with this model, which I purchased at a store without seeing any reviews. I had the same problems: the rakes didn't get all of the waste, it got stuck at least once a week, the plastic containers were hard to fit in and take out, etc. I lived with it, because I figured it was (marginally) better than scooping on my own. When it finally died, I came on here and saw the reviews. Because of them, I bought the Littermaid LM900 (because my cat is very large, otherwise I would get the LM500). What a difference! I've had it for three weeks now, and I don't even have to pay attention to it except for weekly when I clean out the receptacle. If you need the "night turn-off" feature of the Elite, which I did, just attach it to one of those cheap outlet timers for lamps. It has worked great!"
If you are considering buying the LitterMaid Elite not only should you consider the more reliable LitterMaid LM500 or LM900 (larger cats and multiple cat households), but also consider the ScoopFree litter tray. ScoopFree is stealing so much market share away from LitterMaid there is an amazing new development you should know about.
LitterMaid has begun selling replacement litter trays for the ScoopFree! If you check out ScoopFree reviews you will find a decided difference in reports of heightened reliability, superior odor control and a more convenient clean up scenario. This makes sense because the ScoopFree uses a revolutionary design concept based on non-clumping crystal silica litter.

LitterMaid Reviews - The Ugly Truth
Ugh! When I think about the reviews I have read about LitterMaid boxes, I squirm in discomfort. They are not good. This post will give you a good idea of what the reviews are saying and where to go to get more information.
LitterMaid began selling self cleaning boxes a while ago. I believe (but have not been able to confirm) they might have been one of the first manufacturers to do so. This tells us a few things.
Firstly, their customers initially were extremely loyal. After all, what were they comparing LitterMaid against? Manually cleaning the litter box, of course. If the LitterMaid broke down here and there or had to be cleaned often, it was still much better than the manual alternative to some people. In addition, the earlier LitterMaid boxes were more reliable than the current ones today.
Here is a LitterMaid review from Amazon that illustrates these claims. It is from a customer who bought the LitterMaid Elite 9000. They claimed the earlier boxes were reliable with some breakdowns, but these newer ones were not at all reliable. “I'm not sure what they were thinking when they "improved" the LitterMaid. We had a model purchased in 2005 and absolutely loved it. It would occasionally clog but once a week manual scooping wasn't too bad.”
Today LitterMaid reviews indicate extensive maintenance problems. I bought instead a Litter Robot, which got pretty good reviews, to avoid these reported breakdowns. However, that box too broke down within two months of use.
I believe much of the breakdowns of the LitterMaid and similarly conceptualized designs have to do with clumping litter. There are two automatic litter boxes out on the market that do not use clumping litter. They introduce revolutionary approaches to litter box automation.
The ScoopFree litter box (priced in line with LitterMaid boxes) is based on a different form of litter which does not clump, called crystal silica. This box gets great reviews, reporting high reliability, especially if used with a permanent litter tray.
The CatGenie (entry price more expensive than the LitterMaid) is another box worth exploring. It actually flushes clean with water like a human toilet. I have found, however, that users do complain of some breakdowns.
The choice is yours. To learn more about self cleaning litter boxes go to LitterMaid reviews.

LitterMaid Litter - The Real Scoop
Are you trying to find the best LitterMaid litter to use? You are not alone. Having the right litter for LitterMaid boxes is critical for its proper function.
LitterMaid sells their own brand of litter. It is natural corn litter. Corn litter has superior odor control, clumping ability and works well with LitterMaid boxes. If you use this type of litter you should expect good functioning. If you don't, there is a good chance your litter will clog your equipment.
Another thing to be very careful about with your LitterMaid litter is to not under fill or over fill your boxes. You need to have your litter filled just below the full line on the inside of the unit. If you don’t, well, you could be heading for litter box clogging and breakdowns!
There is something very interesting you should know about LitterMaid litter. LitterMaid is now selling the litter for their main competitor, ScoopFree! LitterMaid sells the "ScoopMaid" litter tray.
This tells us something. LitterMaid must be losing market share to ScoopFree and wants to capitalize on the popularity of their main competitor’s success.
Why is ScoopFree so successful? I believe it is because they do not use clumping litter. As I mentioned above the wrong litter can clog the rakes of the LitterMaid litter boxes.
ScoopFree instead uses crystal silica litter which does not clump, but rather absorbs the urine, capturing its odor. Their trays can last up to one month before having to be changed. The main take away from this is ScoopFree is stealing market share away from LitterMaid because they do not break down as much.
If you are looking to buy LitterMaid litter, check out the ScoopFree products too. If you have already made an investment in LitterMaid products, then simply get the best premium clumping litter you can. This litter seems to be premium clumping corn litter sold by LitterMaid or by other manufacturers.

Litter Automatic - The Dream
Ah, “litter automatic.” Just the phrase brings tears of joy to my eyes. I remember when my dear hubby brought home two adorable kitty cats. I was ecstatic as I stared into their huge almond shaped eyes, but cringed at the thought I would have to keep up with their litter boxes.
Double rubble is big litter box trouble. It all seemed quite foreboding.
I admit, I was (not now) a bit too much on the “get me a maid” side of thinking back then. But even knowing my gentrified thinking was flawed, you have to admit, it would be dreamy to have a litter automatic solution working 24/7 quietly in the background every day totally eliminating your litter box duties. Right?
My husband was out to ruin my plan. He kept insisting litter automatic solutions didn’t work. When I went online to research self cleaning litter boxes, much to my dismay, I found he was right. Complaint followed complaint about breakdowns.
Finally I discovered the Litter Robot. It got pretty good reviews so I decided to try it. Well, it lasted only two months, then it broke down. This was rather puzzling to me because it cost twice as much as the main competitor, LitterMaid, and got great reviews. But break down it did.
As I continued my research into the dream of a litter automatic solution that worked, I found two products which merited further consideration. The ScoopFree Litter Box got great reviews and so did the CatGenie.
I do recommend if you are looking for a litter automatic solution to check these out at litter automatic headquarters.

ScoopFree Tray - The Best One
If you are going out to buy the ScoopFree Tray consider the fact there are three VERY different types from which to choose. One of these choices is manufactured by a massive competitor of ScoopFree, which I find at once fascinating and revealing. Read on to avoid costly mistakes and extract the best from your ScoopFree litter box.
ScoopFree Tray: The Flavors
(1) a replacement version;
(2) a competitors version of the replacement model; and,
(3) an independendent manufacter's "forever" model.
ScoopFree Tray: The Replacement Version
The biggest complaint I have found with using the replaceable trays is expense. Even if your tray lasts an entire month, and some do, replacing it on a regular basis can become expensive. Most customers claim it works just fine, however.
ScoopMaid Tray: Wow! LitterMaid Got Into This Business?
I think it is fascinating that LitterMaid has begun selling the ScoopMaid Tray. LitterMaid as you probably know sells self cleaning boxes in competition to the ScoopFree Boxes. By virtue of the fact they are selling replacement trays for their competitor, I would say LitterMaid must be sensing a threat.
Do not buy the competitor version. It does not work. Here is a quote from just one of many negative customer reviews from Amazon, “It is a shame LitterMaid. The bad imitation of the scoopfree litter cartridges is this SCOOPMAID. Is the worse thing that has happened to my poor cat. She started disliking her litter since I started using the new littermaid cartridges. Then urine was leaking underneath the box..... Removing the smell has been an issue.”
Forever Litter Tray (Permanent version of the ScoopFree Tray)
The biggest complaint most users of the ScoopFree litter box have is the cost of replacement cartridges. The Forever Litter Tray solves this problem completely. So if you are looking to buy the ScoopFree Tray, buy the Forever Litter Tray. It will save you money and give you an even better experience with your ScoopFree Litter box.

LitterMaid Boxes - A Cat Lover's Dream
When I was looking to automate my litter box duties, of course I began my search with LitterMaid boxes. They are so popular the name “LitterMaid” is synonymous with self cleaning litter boxes. This innocent little foray into the seemingly innocuous realm of litter boxes ended up producing some really interesting discoveries.
After reading many reviews I began to see a pattern. LitterMaid boxes had a loyal following. Actually, their customer base was so loyal they simply bought a new LitterMaid box when the old one broke down. The operant phrase here is "broke down." It seems the clumpling clay litter clogged the rakes stalling the equipment in most complaints.
What I find even more fascinating, instead of LitterMaid correcting this problem they actually got even worse at engineering. When the Elite LitterMaid came out loyal customers wanted to throw it out in favor of the older, "more reliable" models.
Here is a quote from a review off Amazon.com:
“I have to scoop the litter everyday. I owned the smaller LitterMaid and it worked very good, the reason I bought this one. I am very unhappy with the Elite Mega LME9000.”
From these complaints it seems the LitterMaid Boxes with the greatest reliability are the LM500 and LM900 series.
If you are in the market for LitterMaid boxes check out these models. You also might want to continue your research by clicking on LitterMaid Boxes for more information.
